Chess is a two-player strategy game played on a square board with 64 alternating black and white squares. Each player starts with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns.

The goal of the game is to checkmate the opponent's king, meaning to place it in a position where it cannot escape capture. Each piece moves differently: the rook moves in straight lines, the bishop moves diagonally, the knight moves in an "L" shape, and the queen can move in all directions. The king moves one square at a time, while pawns move forward but capture diagonally.

Games can last anywhere from a few minutes to several hours depending on the players' skill levels. Chess is a blend of short-term tactics and long-term strategy. It requires deep thinking, patience, and the ability to anticipate the opponent’s moves.

Players take turns, with the one controlling the white pieces moving first. To win, you need to think several moves ahead and counter the traps set by your opponent.
